So I think I’m becoming the Hulk

Still lots of fencing to be done at Iron Horse Farm

Still lots of fencing to be done at Iron Horse Farm

Ok so as I’m sitting here at my computer at work, trying to muster the energy to actually get up and do some work. I decided to write another post today (gives me a good excuse not to get up). The main reason I’m having trouble getting up is that I’m so unbelievably sore. For the past few days we (my family and I) have been scrambling to finish everything at Iron Horse Farm before our big move in day on Saturday. Most of this involves fence building, which means loading up the tractor with boards (very very heavy boards – that have been waterlogged from all the rain), driving them over to the fence line, unloading them again, and then helping to hold them up while they are screwed in. But on top of that over the weekend we had 100 bales of hay delivered (which I had to stack) and a few days before that we have to pick up over 100 bags of woody pellets (bedding for the horses) which we loaded into the trailer, then unloaded into the barn as well as carrying them up the stairs to the loft. So all this ontop of my normal stall mucking routine – which if you didn’t already know is an extremely good work out for your abs!

bride and bridesmaidsNow for some reason when I’m doing all this heavy lifting I feel the need to match the strength of the boys (my husband and my father mostly). So I carry 2 bags of woody pellets (for a total of about 70 lbs.) and I lift 2 boards at a time (again about 70 lbs.) – only to have it all catch up with me later. (Hence why I feel like I can’t lift my arms today). And while I’m not complaining too much, because honestly I’ve never felt stronger and more fit, I do feel like I’m becoming the hulk. And I’m not entirely sure that this is a really good thing – afterall I don’t want to look like one of those body building women (just not for me). But this is what happens when you have horses (or live on a farm). I actually sort of enjoy the physical work, you get a really good work out without feeling like you are working out – maybe I should make a “farm” work out video, haha.

strong brideAnyway I dug out these funny photos from my October 2008 wedding that a lake garda wedding photographer had taken, I think I scared the wedding party with my “hulk” muscles. And now that I’m done with this post I guess I actually have to get some work done. Hopefully my muscles aren’t too sore to frame some pictures today!

Chincoteague Ponies on the Farm

A few days ago I was enjoying the company of my 3 boys (Minnow, Blitz and Boomer) so I decided to take a little video while I was observing them.

The two ponies in this video are Boomer and Blitz. They come from the same farm in North Carolina and have the same father, Chesapeake Powhattan’s Promise. Near the end of the video I decided to call Boomer over, he’s such a good boy he came right away (all that clicker training helped).

Anyway enjoy the video, just watching it makes me feel like I’m out on the peaceful farm.

Interview about Minnow

minnow-5Check out the recent interview I gave about Chincoteague Minnow to The Equineist. I think it turned out really great. For a full store on Minnow’s life, and how he learned to paint please check out my page, How it Began.

I have since been researching Minnow’s past, trying to find out more about where he came from/etc. – so in the interview please note that my facts were a tad off. I had some slightly wrong information before (a whisper down the lane effect) and in fact Minnow was not locked in a stall – he was kept in a dirt paddock with some cows, and although he was not “starving” his condition was not that of a healthy horse. With the research I am doing now I hope to uncover more of what happened to Minnow when he left Assateague Island in 1993 as a colt. His story is becoming more and more fascinating to me as I learn new and interesting facts about him. For example at one point in his life he was living on an Amish farm in a field with nearly 100 goats. I think this perhaps contributes to Minnow’s love of small animals.

Anyway enjoy the article!

A place to call home

The new Iron Horse Farm website is up and running! I made many changes to it last night (with more to come today). Iron Horse Farm is the currently under-construction farm that the ponies will reside at in mid-may.

the new website of Iron Horse Farm

the new website of Iron Horse Farm

Iron Horse Farm is privately owned by my parents, Anne and Paul, and it has been a family dream for over 20 years now. We are all very excited for this move, and with it will bring many exciting opportunities. Our 150′ x 280′ ring will be one of the largest riding arenas for mounted games in our area. In the future we hope to hold practices and competitions with even the ability to rent the ring to interested parties for clinics and events. If you have any questions please contact us through our website.
