Farm Life
Racehorse Minnow
In the fall/winter of 2007 Minnow had developed a slight lameness. I spent months trying to diagnosis the issue, xrays were inconclusive, farriers couldn’t find anything, flex and pinch tests revealed nothing. So I waited, hoping it was a very deep abscess like everyone else. (A hoof abscess is a localized bacterial infection in the sensitive structures of the hoof.)
So as Minnow gained more and more weight as most Chincoteague Ponies tend to do (some say they could live off a cement slab), I decided to exercise him anyway.
I took Minnow once a week to the Thoroughbred indoor pool. (ok well technically my mom took him for me most of the time as I was in my final semester of college – thanks mom!).
So once a week Minnow plodded his fat body slowly into the pool and huffed and puffed as he did laps about 1/4 of the speed the racehorses do it. He quickly became a favorite as he was quite a change of pace from the lanky and feisty young racehorses, not to mention he gave everyone kisses and handshakes afterwards.
Here’s a video of the cutest little racepony 🙂
Farm Pals
Yeah its Friday! Here’s some photos from the farm from last weekend to brighten your day (as if being Friday isn’t enough).
The Man of the House
Ammo the Dachshund is resident bug killer around my house. I don’t call the husband when there is a bug crawling around – I call Ammo. His bug killing days got him in to trouble this past summer though – he must have gone after one of the many Wolf Spiders we had creeping into our home, because he ended up with a VERY swollen nose and trip to the vet.
Here’s a video of Ammo saving me from the stink bug invaders. My hero!
Noodle or Dachshund?
Just a fun video of the Dachshund and his antics. Enjoy!
Get to Know Them
I’ve added a new page to the blog – all about getting to know the Trick Ponies of Chincoteague. So pop on over here for names/photos/stats on all 3 trick ponies. There are also links to the full bios for each pony – so you can learn a little bit about how each pony came to live with me.
I also added a sub page for the Trick Pony Friends – which includes the Dachshund of course, my retired Dressage horse, Nitro, my sister’s horse and the Dachshund’s best friend, Trooper.
Hope you enjoy learning a little more about the menagerie of animals that have fallen into my home and my heart and give me something to write about each day.
